The Truth-nature of Dharma

Yutang Lin

The fundamental special feature of Dharma is its ″truth-nature″. The fundamental doctrines of Dharma are only statements on universal principles about life and universe, just as the natural laws described in sciences. Dharma points out that, all sorts of problems in worldly life are rooted in sentient beings′ lack of proper comprehension as to the fundamental nature of their experiences, and thereby they are trapped in illusive grasping to delusions causing performance of various activities that are harmful to themselves and all others involved. Dharma reveals that, the fundamental nature of sentient beings′ direct experiences is beyond grasping—″similar to dreams, illusions, bubbles, shadows, like dewdrops and resemble lightning″. If one can realize that originally it is only as such, then one will naturally be able to abide in original purity of limitless oneness.

Due to the truth-nature of Dharma, Dharma does not require blind faith and obedience, nor does Dharma apply ″Enlightenment, Buddhahood″ as the source of authority, each person can search for truth on his own and bring up debates; furthermore, Dharma clearly indicates that it is possible for one to attain enlightenment through comprehension of truth on his own (Pratyeka-Buddha), and there is also a school in Buddhism that does not rely on Sutras (Chan, Zen).

Truths are not necessarily recognizable and comprehended by everyone, and hence, Dharma does not force everyone to believe, adopt, follow and carry out. Wishing all to receive the benefits of learning Dharma, hence, one propagates Dharma equally to all through expositions on the teachings and putting the essence of Dharma into deeds in daily life. As to beings who cannot accept Dharma, one wishes them well and may they gradually comprehend on their own, through their own experiences in life, the fundamental nature of all experiences, and thereby gradually become free from all sufferings in the worldly realms.

If one can understand the various aspects of the truth-nature of Dharma mentioned above, then it would be very easy to understand the fundamental difference between Dharma and all other kinds of faiths. If people universally respect truth-nature sayings, only then can genuine and long-lasting peace in the world become attainable.
