Ordinary Mind

Yutang Lin

″Ordinary Mind″, as mentioned in Dharma works, refers to mental state, which is peaceful and stable, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened. There is also a Chan (Zen) Kong An (Koan) on ″Ordinary Mind is the Path″. Nevertheless, courses in life twists and turns, it is inevitable for one to encounter disturbing and drastic situations, how, then, could one abide in such ″Ordinary Mind″?

Usually, teachings in Dharma would instruct that, one should not attach to concepts, should not develop comparisons, and let go of attachments. However, unless one is an adept used to no grasping and has profound stability of meditation, this is easier said than done. Indeed, we need only to comprehend the nature of our experiences, and then we could cultivate ″Ordinary Mind″ whenever we want; furthermore, it would be easy to abide in ″Ordinary Mind″.

All our experiences passed instantaneously, and there is no way to grasp it. Attaching to concepts, making comparisons and grasping to attachments subsist only due to our mental grasping. Now that our experiences, despite our feelings of good or bad, like or dislike, are incessantly evolving as causal conditions changed, and no one can control all these, what is the use of our grasping? As one comprehends this and no longer grasps to ideas and desires, then one can cultivate ″Ordinary Mind″ whenever one wants. Furthermore, then it would be easy to abide in ″Ordinary Mind″ because one simply passes days in accordance with causal conditions. The difficulty of realizing this lies in the fact that peoples′ minds are already distant from being pure and simple!
