Free from Dualistic Reactions

Yutang Lin

The fundamental aspiration of a Dharma practitioner is to aspire toward the sooner realization of original purity in limitless openness for each and every sentient being. Usually, this is called as the ″Bodhi Aspiration″ or ″Bodhicitta″.

A Dharma practitioner may encounter all sorts of sentient beings, and the questions brought up, guidance sought, and matters asked to pray for are myriads in varieties. As one proceeds longer on the enlightenment path, the number of requests for blessings and the number of sentient beings related to the requests are like a flowing fountain, impossible to count. Hence, it is impossible for such a Dharma practitioner to engage in verifying relevant facts, to weigh matters on seriousness or importance, or to take into consideration if there is offering or not because the Dharma services are voluntary and free.

The only principle that a Dharma practitioner can uphold in Dharma services is:
Based on Bodhi Aspiration, remain free from dualistic reactions, and handle all requests equally by providing views and suggestions for actions to be taken in accordance with Dharma teachings, and also pray to Buddhas for all requests for blessings equally for best results, without mixing suggestions born of the Dharma practitioner′s personal views or considerations.

This kind of Dharma service, which is free from dualistic reactions, will benefit sentient beings through Dharma teachings and Buddhas′ blessings, without forming devious paths born of a Dharma practitioner′s personal prejudices. Since it is free from dualistic reactions, even though confronting a complicated worldly environment, a Dharma practitioner can still sustain simplicity and purity of mind, without adding further considerations and weighing. Thus, such a Dharma practitioner may advance diligently on the enlightenment path through engaging in Dharma services, and then gradually become mature in spiritual attainments.
