Neither Wisdom nor Gain

Yutang Lin

Expounding on Blank Essence, the ″Heart Sutra″ states, ″neither wisdom nor gain″. Thus, the Sutra clearly indicates that Enlightenment is not gaining something, and also that it has nothing to do with the distinction of being wise or ignorant, but only a thorough comprehension of openness that is originally boundless.

Some Buddhists fail to comprehend this essential point, and hence they practice toward enlightenment with certain intentions and expecting some gains. No matter how devoted they are to the Dharma practices and activities, their actions and inactions do not go beyond their evaluation on their intentions and gains. In other words, they simply circle around in the sphere of their own ″grasping to forms and self″.

Full Enlightenment is simply resuming original purity in boundless openness. And the fundamental hindrance to such resuming of original purity is nothing but one′s failure to recognize clearly that it is the mischievous functioning of personal grasping to ″self″, and yet, instead, one becomes being limited and misled by prejudices and partiality of one′s ″self″.

May Buddhists who engage in ardent Dharma practices all recognize clearly these Dharma principles, and thereby refrain from going astray but, instead, advance smoothly on the right path toward Full Enlightenment!
