Practicing Dharma without Self

Yutang Lin

In modern time people′s life are very busy, and hence it is not easy to find leisure moments in daily life for Dharma practices. When one is in the middle of worldly activities one cannot be separated from self-centered considerations; and then even when one engages in Dharma practices, it is hardly avoidable to still have in mind some lingering concerns over worldly matters. Consequently, one′s Dharma practices, be they on this or that aspect of Dharma, are all inseparable from ″self″, and hence one can hardly be expected to attain the ″non-self″ as expounded in Dharma.

Dharma practitioners, who would like to attain the benefits of Dharma teachings and practices, should recognize clearly at the onset of practice sessions how precious and rare are these periods of time; and if a practitioner does not preempt worldly matters and self-centered intentions and thoughts completely from mind during the practice so as to whole-heartedly devote efforts on the practice for the sole sake of the enlightenment of all sentient beings, then it amounts to wasting this rare and precious time which need to be much appreciated.

If practicing Dharma is mixed with self-centered motivations and considerations, and complicated with worldly maneuvers, then whatever is practiced cannot be pure and right Dharma; how then could one expect to gain the universally equal and great benefits of the Dharma?

May this short essay remind Dharma practitioners to set their minds away from any and all worldly considerations as soon as they begin to engage in some Dharma practices, and instead concentrate only on practicing Dharma for the sake of all sentient beings′ sooner attainment of full enlightenment. If one can be so diligent during Dharma practice sessions, then in the future it will become possible for one to gradually attain such Bodhi mind and perspective in daily life, and eventually merge into the realization of ″non-self″.
