Attitude for Dharma Practices

Yutang Lin

For people intended to engage in Dharma practices
Whatever the degree of their devotion
In the long run
Daily routine Dharma practices are of vital importance
They form the pillars binding a practitioner to the enlightenment path

As practices become routine for long years
Easily they deteriorate into formality without mindfulness
If at the beginning of each session
A practitioner could first adjust the mental attitude
It should help increase clarity and concentration of mind

Personal attachments and views
Upon death might be realized to be indeed merely illusive
What a pity that one's life passed in vain within such illusions
If a practitioner could remind himself of this point before starting practices
Upon the rare occasion of Dharma practice in this fussy and busy life
Remind oneself of this kind of awakening "right before dying"
Then perhaps one could get rid of interferences from distractive thoughts
And attain a purer state of mind for engaging in Dharma practices

The omnipresent blessings from Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
Cannot be appreciated by us who are constantly enwrapped in worldly considerations
How precious and rare is the present brief period for Dharma practices
How could we still linger in nets of worldly delusions to continue wasting our life
If one could thus appreciate and treasure the moments for Dharma practices
Then it would become easy for one to enter communion with the holy beings

Even though what are stated above are only a few words
And yet they derive from reflection and realization of one who has practiced to old age
With the hope that these words might help novices to improve their practices
I again pick up paper and pen that have been left untouched for long time
